Popup Trailer/Tow Vehicle Weights and Ratings

Because I couldn't find it in my owner's manual, on my door jamb sticker, or anywhere else on the internet, I decided to directly contact Chrysler customer assistance for the Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR) of my 1998 Chrysler Town & Country LXi AWD with 3.8 liter V6 and tow package. According to them, this vehicle has a 8300 lb GCWR.

The text below is cut and pasted from their e-mail reply:

Dear Brian:

Thanks for the email regarding your 1998 Chrysler Town and Country.

Our records indicate the GCWR for your vehicle is 8,300 pounds.

Thank you for your interest.

Sincerely,

I have a 1998 Chrysler Town & Country LXi AWD with 3.8 liter V6 and tow package.

I am trying to find the GCWR for this vehicle. It's not listed on my door sticker nor is it listed in my owner's manual. Please advise.

The van also has a 32 square foot frontal area restriction:

Dear Brian:

Thanks for the reply.

The front of the trailer should not exceed 32 square feet.

Thanks again for the reply.

Sincerely,

Glenn

Thank you very much for your quick response. That is very good customer service.

I forgot to ask in that initial question what the frontal area restrictions are with that tow capacity?

WEIGHING YOUR POPUP

Knowing the weights of your popup/tow vehicle combination prior to purchase is important to ensure you do not exceed your towing capacity, GCWR, and/or axle capacities of either your tow vehicle or popup. One thing is for certain, your popup or trailer WILL weigh much more than is stated in the promotional literature. For my popup, the popular options (furnace, water heater, awning, refrigerator) added about 300 lbs. We pack around 250-300 lbs in the trailer, which leads to the loaded weight below.

Once purchased the only way to determine this figure is to go to a scale and weigh it. You can either pay to have it weighed at a CAT scale or you can try going to your local dump or hardware store with raw materials yard and weigh it there. My local ACE hardware has a scale and they let me use it for free.

If you are unsure of your maximum ratings, check your owners manual, sticker on your door jamb, or contact your manufacturer. If you are still having difficulty, contact me at SactoCampers@yahoo.com and I will try to steer you in the right direction.
